Marguerite Duras (1914-1996)

Marguerite Duras wrote "The Lover," an autobiographical novel that won the Prix Goncourt, and from what I understand she was also a filmmaker on top of being one of France's most significant authors, which is a genuinely intimidating amount of range for one person. Writing autobiographically about your own most difficult, formative experiences and having it become recognized as literature instead of just, like, oversharing, takes a specific kind of nerve I actually think about a lot as someone who writes pretty openly online myself, sometimes to a fault. There's a version of "The Lover" energy in a lot of what my generation does now, honestly, just compressed into shorter, more disposable formats — the impulse to turn your own hardest, most personal material into something other people can actually learn from is the same impulse, whether it's a Prix Goncourt novel or a video. Duras clearly figured out how to do that with real craft and staying power, not just raw exposure. That's the part that's actually hard.
