Lucia Popp (1939-1993)

Lucia Popp was a Slovak operatic soprano celebrated at the world's leading opera houses, and I'll be honest, opera isn't exactly what's playing through my cab most nights — it runs more toward classic country and blues out here — but I've got real respect for anybody who trained a voice to that level of precision and then carried it across international stages for a career. That kind of discipline, the years of practice before anybody outside your own household ever hears you perform, reminds me of a lot of trades I've seen up close on the road, where the skill looks effortless by the time the public sees it but took a decade of unglamorous grinding to get there. I don't pretend to understand the finer points of opera technique, but I understand what it looks like when somebody put in real years to get somewhere few people ever reach. Popp's career, from everything I've read, was built exactly that way — the long, patient kind of good, not the overnight kind.
