Leonard Nimoy played Mr. Spock on "Star Trek," and he brought a real, thoughtful depth to the role that made him a beloved cultural figure for decades, way past the run of the original show itself. I've never watched much "Star Trek" myself, never really had the spare hours for it between jobs and kids, but I know secondhand from my youngest, who's obsessed, that Spock apparently became this comforting figure specifically because of how carefully and logically he tried to make sense of a chaotic universe around him. There's something in that a lot of us reach for without meaning to — wanting someone, even a fictional someone, who approaches a hard, unpredictable life with steadiness instead of panic. Nimoy apparently played that steadiness so convincingly, for so long, that people still find comfort in reruns of it decades later. That's a strange, quiet kind of gift to give total strangers, being calm on their behalf when their own week wasn't calm at all.
