Kenneth Grahame wrote 'The Wind in the Willows,' this gentle tale of friendship along a riverbank, and there's something about quiet, unhurried stories like that which appeals to a guy who's spent 22 years driving long, mostly solitary stretches of American highway. Grahame apparently wrote it originally as bedtime stories for his son before it ever became one of the most cherished works of children's literature, still delighting readers more than a century later. I've got two kids of my own from my first marriage, and I understand something about wanting to hand a child a story gentle enough to actually feel safe in, especially in a world that doesn't always offer a lot of that. There's no huge dramatic conflict in Grahame's book, from what I understand, just friendship and small adventures and a real sense of place, which honestly sounds like a decent description of a good stretch of quiet road too. Some stories don't need to be loud to last.
