Judy Garland (1922-1969)

There's genuinely no escaping Judy Garland if you were a kid anywhere near a television during the holidays — 'The Wizard of Oz' is one of those movies that just gets replayed into every generation whether you seek it out or not, and she's the reason it works at all as Dorothy. It's kind of funny to think about now, in a world of algorithm-fed content where nothing sticks around long enough to become a shared thing anymore, that this one film has somehow stayed a cultural touchstone across, what, several generations at this point. I say 'funny' but I actually mean something closer to comforting — proof that some things really do just last because they're genuinely good, not because a platform is pushing them at you. Garland built a celebrated career in both film and music beyond just that one role, obviously, but Dorothy is the one that made her permanent in a way most performers, even very good ones, never quite achieve. That's a strange kind of immortality to hand someone at a young age.
