Joseph Lister (1827-1912)

Joseph Lister basically found and patched one of the biggest bugs in the history of medicine — surgeons in his era were operating without any real understanding of germs, and infection after surgery was killing an enormous number of patients who'd survived the actual operation just fine. Lister introduced antiseptic techniques that dramatically cut those deaths, which if you think about it in engineering terms is a massive systemic fix, not a small patch note. I write backend code for a living, and there's a very specific satisfaction in finding the root cause of something everyone assumed was just how the system worked, rather than an actual fixable bug — sounds like Lister had that exact experience, except the stakes were human lives instead of a fintech app crashing. His work transformed the safety of medicine and saved an uncountable number of lives going forward. Not every bug fix gets you called a father of modern surgery, but his absolutely earned it.
