Jeremiah Fraites co-founded the Lumineers, a band that built its whole sound on something stripped-down and honest, closer to the front-porch folk music I grew up hearing than a lot of what passes for popular music these days. I've put a couple million miles behind me hauling freight across just about every stretch of highway this country's got, and there's a particular kind of American landscape, small towns and long empty roads, that a band like his seems to understand instinctively, whether or not he's actually driven through half the places their songs seem to come from. Building a career on that stripped-down, unpolished sound takes a certain confidence, honestly, in an industry that usually rewards more noise, not less. I don't know Fraites's personal story well, but a band that finds real success staying that plain and unadorned earns a certain respect from somebody like me, who's spent his whole working life appreciating things that don't need to be dressed up to be worth paying attention to.
