Ida Lupino (1918-1995)

Ida Lupino directed her own films in 1950s Hollywood at a time when almost no women were allowed anywhere near that chair, and she used that rare position to tackle genuinely bold social issues on screen instead of playing it safe once she'd finally gotten in the door. That kind of nerve, using hard-won access to actually say something risky rather than just enjoying having arrived, reminds me a lot of the choices I've had to make keeping my bakery afloat through two near-closures — you can play it safe once you've survived, or you can keep taking the harder, more honest path even when it costs you. I nearly lost this place twice, once in year two and once during the pandemic, and both times what saved it was doing right by my community rather than the easy thing. Lupino apparently had that same instinct as a filmmaker, using her platform for something that actually mattered instead of just protecting the seat she'd fought so hard to get.
