Ian Botham (b. 1955)

Ian Botham is remembered as one of the greatest all-rounders cricket ever had, which just means the man refused to be pinned down to only batting or only bowling, he did both and did them well enough that nobody could argue with him. What actually got my attention, though, was reading that later in life he walked hundreds of miles for charity, more than once, on a body that had already taken a beating from decades of professional sport. I know a little something about being on your feet past the point your body wants to quit — mine barks at me by two in the afternoon most days between the store, the deliveries, and the houses I clean, and I don't even have a stadium of people watching. Botham didn't have to keep pushing his body like that once his playing days were behind him; the fundraising walks were his choice, not a job he needed the money from. Doing hard physical things for other people, on your own time, after you've already earned your rest, is a different kind of toughness than the one that gets you famous in the first place.
