Hugo Weaving has one of those voices that could probably sell you anything, and he's used it across two of the most iconic franchises there are — The Matrix and Lord of the Rings — playing characters that couldn't be more different from each other in tone. I think about range like that the way I think about a good bakery case: you want the plain, dependable croissant and the weird, ambitious seasonal thing sitting side by side, and both need to actually be excellent, not just different for the sake of it. Weaving's Agent Smith is all cold, clipped menace, and then Elrond is this whole other register, mournful and elegant, and somehow it's obviously the same skilled hand behind both. I've built a menu around exactly that principle for years now, trying to make sure nothing on it is there just to look interesting — it all has to actually earn its place. Sounds like Weaving's approached a whole career the same way, choosing roles that stretch what he can do instead of just repeating what already worked.
