Gordon Banks (1937-2019)

There's a famous photograph of one of Gordon Banks's saves that's basically perfect composition — body fully extended, ball just out of frame, the whole shape of the image telling you everything about the effort before you even know the outcome. I think in images for a living, so a career built partly on a handful of visually unforgettable moments like that catches my attention differently than pure statistics would. Being part of England's 1966 World Cup-winning team ties him permanently to one of the most replayed pieces of sports footage there is, and being remembered as one of the greatest goalkeepers in the game's history means his positioning and reflexes held up under exactly that kind of scrutiny for years, not just for one photogenic moment. My husband Marcus, who teaches middle school, is the real football fan in our house, but even I can appreciate an athlete whose whole legacy is basically about being perfectly, dependably in the right place at the right instant, over and over, for an entire career.
