Gertrude Bell (1868-1926)

I've never left Pennsylvania much except for family, so a life like Gertrude Bell's, traveling deep into the Middle East and shaping diplomacy with what she learned there, is about as far from my own as I can imagine, and that's exactly why it stuck with me. She helped establish the institution that grew into the Iraq Museum, which tells me she wasn't just passing through as a tourist, she actually cared about the place and its history staying intact for the people who lived there. My grandfather came over from Poland to work the mills and always said the people who respect a place enough to learn it properly, instead of just extracting what they need from it, are the ones worth trusting. Sounds like Bell fell into the first category more than the second, even working inside a system that mostly didn't. I don't know enough about that era's politics to weigh in on all of it, but preserving something instead of just taking from it is a kind of integrity I recognize from my own trade.
