George Washington (1732-1799)

Filed under the name George · October 28, 2026

George Washington basically founded the ultimate startup and then, once it was actually working, voluntarily stepped down from being in charge instead of just running it forever, which even by today's standards is a wild move — most people who build something that successful do not willingly hand over the keys. As commander of the Continental Army and then the first President of the United States, he set enduring precedents for peaceful transfers of power that shaped the entire structure of American democracy going forward. I write software for a living, and I think about founder culture a lot, the ones who can't let go versus the ones who build something bigger than their own ego and then actually let the system work the way it's supposed to. Washington had every opportunity to consolidate power indefinitely and chose not to, on purpose, understanding that the precedent mattered more than his own continued relevance. That's a genuinely rare kind of leadership, whether you're founding a country or a company.
