I've taught enough scared children to know what steady looks like when everything around it is shaking, and from what I've read, that's what this president gave the country. He came to office with the whole nation flat on its back from the Depression, and then had to see it through a world war on top of that, and folks say his voice on the radio alone calmed kitchens all across America the way a good teacher's voice can calm a rowdy classroom after recess. I think of a boy I had once, back in the seventies, whose daddy lost the farm and who came to school so anxious he couldn't sit still — what that child needed wasn't a lecture, it was somebody calm standing at the front of the room saying we're going to get through this together. That's leadership, plain and simple, whether it's a third-grade classroom or a nation. My grandmother lived through those years and never forgot the relief of it. There's a lesson there about steadiness being its own kind of courage, and I don't reckon that one ever goes out of style.
