Eugene Cernan (1934-2017)

Eugene Cernan commanded Apollo 17 and became the last person to ever walk on the Moon, which, coaches, think about that phrase for a second — 'the last person,' a record that's been standing untouched for over fifty years now because nobody's even attempted to beat it since. That's not a stat you break with hustle, that's a stat that depends on an entire program deciding to stop playing the game, and he's still the guy who was out there when the buzzer sounded. My locker room talks a lot about legacy, about being remembered for something bigger than a single highlight, and it doesn't get much bigger than literally being the answer to a trivia question about an entire species' relationship with the Moon. One of my former players got drafted this year, low round, practice squad, and it made me think about how some records are about being first and some are about being last, and both of them take you being ready when your one moment actually shows up.
