Estelle Parsons (b. 1927)

I don't get to the theater much, Braddock isn't exactly Broadway, but a career spanning decades in both film and theater the way Estelle Parsons managed says something about sticking with a trade long after the flashy parts fade, which I respect more than most people realize. Thirty-four years I worked the same steel plant, and what people don't understand about a long career in anything is that most of it isn't glamorous, it's just showing up and doing the craft properly year after year. She won an Academy Award along the way, sure, but the part of her story that actually impresses me is the 'decades-long' part, not any single trophy. Donna's had a hip replaced this year and I've been doing the cooking, badly, and it's made me think a lot about what it actually takes to keep doing something difficult for a very long time without quitting. Parsons apparently just kept at her craft. That's the whole ballgame, in my experience — not the highlight reel, just the sticking with it.
