Earl Campbell (b. 1955)

Earl Campbell is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, celebrated as one of the most powerful rushers the NFL has ever seen, which as someone who spends her mornings kneading dough starting at 4 a.m. has given me an unexpectedly personal appreciation for sheer, repetitive physical force applied consistently over years. My wrists ache just thinking about the kind of sustained bodily effort a Hall of Fame career like that requires, week after week, season after season, with real physical cost that doesn't always show up until decades later. I don't follow football closely — bakery hours don't leave much room for Sunday games — but I respect anyone whose whole professional identity is built on being powerful and reliable at the exact same time, since those two qualities don't always travel together. My own two grandmothers came from very different physical traditions of hard, bodily labor, and something in Campbell's story, built on strength that held up under real pressure, feels like it belongs to that same lineage of people who did the hard physical thing and made it count.
