Daniel Boone (1734-1820)

Daniel Boone helped blaze the Wilderness Road through the Cumberland Gap, and I think about him sometimes the way I think about my own family, who've farmed the same forty acres in the Ozarks since the 1890s — somebody, at some point, had to be first onto ground nobody else in the family had ever stood on. Boone opened the way for westward settlement at real personal risk, becoming a lasting symbol of pioneer resilience for generations of Americans who came after him, most of whom will never know his exact name but are living, in some small way, on account of the trail he helped cut. I taught frontier history to third graders for years, and Boone always got the kids' attention more than most historical figures, probably because there's something a child understands instinctively about a person brave enough to go first. My grandkids still ask about him. Good stories about good, hard-won ground never really go out of style.
