Clarence Birdseye figured out flash-freezing and basically invented the modern frozen food aisle, which might sound like a small thing until you consider how many meals I've eaten out of a truck-stop freezer case over twenty-two years on the road, entirely because of what he worked out. That's the kind of invention that doesn't get remembered with the same fanfare as a moon landing or a hit record, but it quietly reshaped how ordinary people, including guys like me driving through the middle of nowhere at 2 a.m., actually eat. I respect that kind of unglamorous, practical genius, the sort that doesn't need a highway named after it to matter. He apparently got the idea watching how fish froze naturally up in the Arctic, which is the kind of observation you only make if you're paying real attention to the world around you rather than rushing past it. A lot of the best ideas I've heard about on this road came from somebody just noticing something ordinary and taking it seriously.
