Bradley Wiggins became the first British cyclist ever to win the Tour de France and collected eight Olympic medals along the way, which as somebody who's worked twelve-hour shifts on my feet for decades, I have real appreciation for ā that kind of sustained physical endurance across years of training doesn't happen from talent alone, it happens from a body that's been asked to keep going long past the point of comfort, over and over, for a very long time. Cycling especially seems like a sport built entirely on that kind of quiet suffering nobody sees, hours and hours of training that never make it onto a highlight reel, all so that a handful of races actually pay off. I think about that with my own patients sometimes too, the ones who fought through long illnesses with a similar kind of unglamorous endurance nobody outside the family ever really witnesses. Wiggins got his medals and his records for that discipline. Most people who endure that much never get any medal at all, and I try to remember that too.
