Antonio Banderas built a career on charisma that translates convincingly across two languages and two very different film industries, which is a more precise achievement than the word "charisma" alone usually credits. Moving fluidly between Spanish and English-language film, and holding an audience's attention in both, requires more than screen presence; it requires a genuine command of tone that survives translation, something I find more scientifically interesting than most film criticism bothers to examine. I do not watch a great many action films myself, preferring literary fiction and opera for my own leisure, but I recognize sustained, cross-linguistic success as a real and unusual skill rather than simple good fortune. My late husband Daniel, who was a historian of language and migration in his own field, would have had a great deal to say about what it takes to become a recognizable star in two cultural contexts at once. I will simply note that doing so convincingly, across a long career, deserves more credit for its underlying difficulty than it typically receives from casual observers.
