Angelo Ogbonna (b. 1988)

Soccer's never been our sport around Piney Grove — football means something with pads and a huddle here — but I understand Angelo Ogbonna built a real reputation for defensive leadership in England's top league, which even I can appreciate, because defense is the unglamorous work in nearly every sport there is. Nobody grows up dreaming of being praised for stopping things instead of scoring them, same as nobody grows up dreaming of grading spelling tests, but somebody has to do that steady, less-flashy job well or the whole team falls apart. I always had more respect for the quiet, dependable kids in my classroom than the ones showing off, because it's usually the dependable ones holding everything together while nobody's watching closely. Being known specifically for leadership on the defensive end of an Italian footballer's career, in a league that famous, tells me he earned his teammates' trust the hard way, one unglamorous match at a time, the same way you earn a good name in any line of work.
