Andrew Wiles (b. 1953)

Andrew Wiles worked in near-total secrecy for seven years to solve Fermat's Last Theorem, a mathematical puzzle that had stumped people for 350 years, and something about that specific kind of patience resonates with me even though I run a bakery and he's a mathematician — there's a version of slow, careful, mostly invisible work in both of our fields, where nobody sees the process, just the final result once it finally comes together. Seven years is an enormous stretch of time to keep faith in a project nobody else can see progress on, especially with no guarantee it would ever actually work out. My bakery nearly closed twice in its own much shorter, much less mathematically impressive history, and both times what kept it alive was believing it was worth continuing even when the outcome wasn't obvious yet. Wiles finally cracked it in 1994 and earned worldwide acclaim, closing a genuinely ancient mystery. That kind of long, quiet persistence deserves exactly the credit it got.
