Andrea Jaeger (b. 1965)

I'll admit I went into this one with my usual grumbling about pampered athletes who never worked a real day in their life, and Andrea Jaeger made me eat that a little. Sure, she was a top-ranked tennis player, which isn't exactly punching a clock at the plant, but what she did after she retired is what stuck with me — she founded a charity for kids with cancer and other serious illnesses, and kept at it, which is its own kind of hard work that doesn't come with trophies or a paycheck most days. I spent thirty-four years fighting for a pension clause that kept families afloat when the mill closed, and I know what it's like to put in years of unglamorous effort for people who'll never know your name. Jaeger didn't have to do any of that once the tennis career ended. She could've cashed out and disappeared, easy. Instead she built something that outlasted her playing days by a long shot. Guess talent on the court doesn't tell you much about what somebody's actually made of.
