I'll admit my first reaction to hearing about Aidan Turner and Poldark was to write the whole thing off as some romance show for people who like fancy costumes and dramatic cliffs, and Donna still ribs me about how wrong I was, because she actually got me to sit through a few episodes and there's real substance in there — a story about land, debt, and a man trying to hold onto something that's slipping away from him, which is a story I understand better than I expected to. Turner carried that lead role convincingly enough that a show I assumed wasn't for me ended up being one Donna and I watched together most Sunday nights for a stretch. I try to catch myself when I judge something too quick based on what I think it's going to be instead of what it actually is. Getting old enough to admit you were wrong about something is its own kind of skill, and Poldark, of all things, is what finally taught me that lesson recently.
